Neal is a college professor who hates his ordinary life and feels there is another plane of existence that he is meant to be on. He is married, has a dutiful wife and preoccupied teenager so, to him, an affair with his teaching assistant is justified. She introduces him to Astra travel. After following her instructions, one day he wakes up in ancient Rome, a Senator just before the sack of Rome by the Vandals.

There he can act out his wildest fantasies but in his wildest dreams, he never thought that it would all come at a price. He is a Senator embroiled in politics, adultery, and unrequited love. Now he learns that there is a price to pay for looking into things that were not meant to be looked into.
