He grew up without electricity or indoor plumbing and faced hardships which many people today would find difficult to imagine. During childhood, Alex played where he shouldn't, had run-ins with the law, and overcame a serious illness. He had many jobs, such as a pinsetter at a bowling alley and vegetable picker in the canning industry. Within these pages are quotes from Alex and the stories he wrote for his grown children about his experiences. He wrote with humour, nostalgia, and a unique flare.
